Mission Statement

Unlocked Doors Productions was created to document and record critical firsthand accounts of those affected and institutionalized by Canada’s juvenile justice system. We produce Canadian content film and media that brings awareness to the impacts institutionalization has upon vulnerable youth and chronicles its long-term effects within our society at large. Our focus is on the human experience. Our goal is to highlight and help to implement changes to a system that has remained virtually unchanged for over a hundred years. Unlocked Doors is a grassroots initiative supported by pure will and determination. Along with our non-profit partners and through charitable donations from people like you, the history of at-risk and homeless children is finally being confronted. Take action and get involved today!

Erika Tafel

Erika Tafel brings more than a decade of research on Juvenile Justice, first-hand accounts from ex-clients reaching back decades, and a type of passion that can only be seeded through personal experience. Her aim is to produce Canada’s first documentary on Juvenile Justice. Tafel exposed it all in her gritty memoir, Slave To The Farm: True Tales of Truancy & Incarceration, and has completed her first screenplay, SHAWBRIDGE, co-authored by Jason Shanski and directed by Catherine Scorsese. Tafel is an accomplished public speaker and is currently a director on her local Boundary Restorative Justice Board. She is however, most comfortable off-the-beaten-trail and living outside the box. She bucked tradition, and raised her two daughters off-grid, while building an underground house with her husband of twenty years. They continue to homestead in the Southern Okanagan of British Columbia.
